Your class will find out what the word 'holiday' means before taking a closer look at seaside holiday activities. They will think about some of the features of seaside holidays and the vocabulary associated with the beach. Your class will discuss photos showing seaside activities and their own experiences of seaside holidays.

During this History focused seaside holidays lesson for KS1 your class will compare historical seaside photos and paintings with modern photos. They will explain the features that helped them identify if the pictures were from the past or the present. Your class will be encouraged to be detectives as they explain what the pictures tell them about holidays from a long time ago.

In this history lesson for KS1 your class will find out why the seaside was only enjoyed by rich people in the past. Your class will look at the inventions that made seaside holidays more accessible for everyone, including the role the steam train had in allowing people to travel to the beach. This fun and informative lesson will allow your children to discover the British tradition of going to the seaside originated in Victorian times.

Take your class back in time 100 years as they explore what seaside holidays were like 100 years ago at the height of their popularity. There they will discover all the delights of the seaside, including Punch and Judy shows, brass bands, jellied eels, bathing machines, donkey rides and much more. They can also listen to and learn the classic holiday song 'Beside the Seaside' and use this to find more clues about what seaside holidays were like. This lesson is perfect for teaching your KS1 class all about seaside holidays in the past.

During this lesson your children will apply their knowledge of seaside holidays in the past to order seaside holidays in chronological order from the past to the present. Your class will order photos of, and facts about, seaside holidays from 100 years ago, 50 years ago and today using clues in the information sources to help them. They will think about some popular seaside activities and how these activities have changed over time.

The final lesson in this series encourages your class to think about the similarities and differences between seaside holidays now and 100 years ago. Your children will compare modes of transport to the beach, beach clothing, popular foods to eat and types of entertainment available as they share their understanding of how seaside holidays have changed.
