Everyone loves playtime (even grown-ups!) and this Toys in the Past KS1 History planning pack allows your class to jump feet first into the fun-filled world of toys! Explore the history of toys with your Year 1 class as they think about and discuss their favourite toys and then go on to look at what toys were like in the past and how they are different to toys today.

#TheCompleteSeries6lessons

With detailed lesson plans, informative slides, differentiated worksheets and activities, picture cards and much, much more, these Toys History KS1 lessons provide you with everything you need to teach this playful scheme of work, with no need to toy around with planning of your own!

This scheme of work is also part of a Topic Bundle. Perfect if you are teaching 'Toys' as a cross-curricular topic.

#Lesson1OurFavouriteToys

This Our Favourite Toys KS1 History lesson planning pack is the first of five lessons in the 'Toys Past and Present' scheme of work. In it, your class will take a closer look at their favourite toys, or toys that are familiar to them. They'll be encouraged to describe the characteristics of these toys through a range of fun activities. Children will also have to think about how they can find out about toys from different times in history.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Riddle cards
  • Picture cards
#Lesson2Thehistoryoftoysgrownupsusedtoplaywith

To get your key stage 1 children thinking about the history of toys, this lesson introduces them to some people the same age as their parents and grandparents. Your class will investigate the kind of toys grown-ups liked to play with when they were younger. They'll also have the opportunity to investigate some older toys, and talk to older people about what their favourite toys were.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Picture cards
#Lesson3ToysFromthePast

In this Toys From the Past lesson, your class will learn what the term 'decade' means, then go on to investigate popular toys from past decades. As well as learning to order dates chronologically, your children will also have fun finding out about popular toys from the 90s – and earlier decades, too. They'll even discover when some of their favourite toys from the past, such as LEGO or Barbie dolls, were first invented.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Information sheets for each decade
  • Poster templates
#Lesson4OldandNewToys

Old and new toys are the subject of comparison in this investigative History lesson. Your class will use a growing range of vocabulary (there's resources included to help them with that!) to describe old and new toys, as they sort them into different categories.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Worksheet
  • Adjective cards
#Lesson5ToysHistoryDetectives

Challenge your children to become toys history detectives and investigate a range of toys, old and new. What differences can they identify? In this lesson, your class will order pictures chronologically by looking at the same toy (such as a doll or car) from different time periods. They will need to investigate the clues and describe how they knew which toys were the oldest and which were most recent. They will also identify what is similar and what is different about the same toys over different periods.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Picture sheets
#Lesson6OurToyMuseum

The final lesson in this series consolidates what the children have learnt about toys and challenges them to transform the classroom into a toy museum to show what they have found out. To do this, they will have to organise and arrange toys into categories, either through artwork or using real toys. You can then invite other classes, teachers or parents to come and view your fantastic museum!
