They will read decimals in words and numerals, and use their place value knowledge to start comparing numbers with up to three decimal places. The final lesson in this series puts rounding decimals into real-life contexts in this lesson as they apply a variety of maths skills to find averages, rounding the answer to the nearest tenth or whole number when needed. The slides go through simple examples of how to do this, using calculators to support their calculations, before challenging children to gather and interpret their own data in the same way during their independent learning. There are also sets of data ready to be analysed in the alternative activity.

Curriculum Objectives covered
  • Year 6 - read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10 000 000 and determine the value of each digit
  • Year 6 - identify the value of each digit in numbers given to three decimal places and multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 giving answers up to three decimal places
  • Year 6 - solve problems which require answers to be rounded to specified degrees of accuracy
  • Year 6 - calculate and interpret the mean as an average

Planning and resources for two weeks worth of work, by the time you consolidate learning and discussions this is great. The kids love the random pictures of the animals talking it through too!
