In this sequence of six lessons, your Year 2 class will read 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' and order the main events of the story. The children will use commas in a list and noun phrases to describe the items in Mr Grinling's lunch basket. They will then look at recipes from Mrs Grinling's cookery book to develop a deep understanding of the key features of good instructions. By rehearsing and performing a cookery programme, live from the little white cottage on the cliffs, they will develop confidence in using a range of time adverbials and imperative verbs in their instructions. Your Year 2 class will then design their own disgusting sandwiches to keep those pesky seagulls away! Children will learn how to use question marks and commas in a list to write an effective introduction to their recipe. In the final part of the unit they will plan and write their instructions to add to a whole-class recipe book!

In this Sequencing the Story Year 2 lesson pack, inspired by 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', children will firstly use the front cover of the book to make predictions about what will happen in the story.

Using the engaging slideshow which comes as part of this pack, your Year 2 class will then have a go at ordering sets of events from the story by positioning baskets in the correct chronological order on the rope! The children will then order a set of printable cards onto a storyboard to show the correct sequence of events from 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. Alternatively, you might choose to use the comic strip frame included in the pack as a different way for children to show their understanding of the story's events.

In this Commas in a List Year 2 lesson pack inspired by 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', children will firstly see what they can remember about the story with a short quiz about the main events.

They will then learn to use commas to list the delicious food in Mr Grinling's lunch basket, remembering of course to use 'and' between the last two items! Your Year 2 class will be shown how adjectives can be used to make their sentences with commas more descriptive. In the main part of the lesson, children will write various 'commas in a list' sentences inspired by the story.

In this Key Features of Instructions Year 2 lesson pack, inspired by 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', children will start by comparing two of Mrs Grinling's recipes and discussing which one would be easier to follow and why.

Your Year 2 class will then look in detail at the key features of good instructions and how they help the reader. A good quality set of instructions will be analysed and the key features identified. The children will then see if they can spot the key features in another model text and label it to show where they are. By the end of the lesson, your Year 2 class will have developed a checklist of key features to refer to when writing their own instructions.

In this Language of Instructions Year 2 lesson pack, inspired by 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', children will firstly look for examples of time adverbials and imperative verbs in one of Mrs Grinling's recipes.

Your Year 2 class will then work in pairs to rehearse a cookery programme live from Mrs Grinling's kitchen! They will use images of how to make iced cupcakes to practise giving clear instructions to the viewers at home. They will perform their cookery shows at the end of the lesson, trying hard to include a range of time adverbials and imperative verbs. Higher-ability children will be encouraged to use adverbs to make their instructions even clearer.

By now, your Year 2 class will have developed a good understanding of the key features of instructions. In this lesson, inspired by 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', children will imagine the mustard that Mrs Grinling used to fend off those pesky seagulls has run out!

The children will be tasked to design their own disgusting sandwich to keep the seagulls away. What will they include...stinky cheese? Brussel Sprouts? Extra-hot chilli sauce? The slideshow is full of ideas for the children to use or they might think of some of their own. After drawing a plan of their sandwich, children will use word banks and a sandwich planner to plan out the steps for their recipe. They will decide which time adverbials and imperative verbs to use for each step whilst higher-ability children will be challenged to plan in adverbs they will use. Feeling brave? You could bring in the ingredients and allow the children to actually make their sandwiches!

Your Year 2 class are now ready to write their recipe for Mrs Grinling's new sandwich! At the start of the lesson, shared writing will be used to model to the class how to write an effective introduction containing a question and a 'commas in a list' sentence.

Then it will be time for your Year 2 class to get writing! After recapping the key features of instructions, children will follow their plan to write out their recipe for a disgusting sandwich. Differentiated writing frames to inspire the children are included within the pack. At the end of the lesson, children will move around the classroom and read each other's instructions. They will use the success criteria for good instructions to evaluate their own and each others' writing.
