Fractions Year 5

Through developing their knowledge of fractions in KS2 (which in Year 4 includes decimals, and in Year 5 and 6, extends to percentages), students will gain a skill set that will help them navigate the world, approach complex problems, and build a deeper understanding of mathematics as a whole.

Wooden blocks showing the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages

In upper KS2, children learn about the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages

During Year 5, in line with the National Curriculum, children are taught to:

  • compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number
  • identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including tenths and hundredths
  • recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 as a mixed number [for example, 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 = 1 and 1/5 ]
  • add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, and denominators that are multiples of the same number
  • multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams
  • read and write decimal numbers as fractions [for example, 0.71 = 71/100 ]
  • recognise and use thousandths and relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents
  • round decimals with 2 decimal places to the nearest whole number and to 1 decimal place
  • read, write, order and compare numbers with up to 3 decimal places
  • solve problems involving number up to 3 decimal places
  • recognise the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to ‘number of parts per 100’, and write percentages as a fraction with denominator 100, and as a decimal fraction
  • solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents of 1/2, 1/4, 1/5, 2/5, 4/5 and those fractions with a denominator of a multiple of 10 or 25

PlanBee's ready-to-teach Fractions Year 5 schemes of work ensure coverage of the above National Curriculum objectives. Each of our lesson packs has been designed to save teachers time by providing everything needed to deliver outstanding Maths lessons, including lesson plans, slideshows and a range of printable activities. We have highlighted a selection of our schemes below:

Fractions Year 5: Fractions and Proportion

This fully-prepared scheme of work for Year 5 will help your class brush up their fractions knowledge and introduce a whole range of new skills! Children will learn how to find equivalent fractions without the need for visual representations, how to add and subtract fractions with a common denominator, how to convert improper fractions to mixed number fractions (and vice versa), as well as how to order and compare sets of proper, improper and mixed number fractions.

Each of the lessons within this Fractions Year 5 pack contains:

  • a detailed lesson plan with differentiated activities
  • a slideshow for the teaching input
  • a range of printable resources for independent learning activities
  • answer sheets where necessary

Fractions Year 5: Decimals and Fractions

Help your class to develop their understanding of decimals and fractions with this ready-to-teach scheme of work for Year 5. Exploring how they can convert fractions and decimals to find equivalents, as well as how to solve addition, subtraction and multiplication problems involving fractions, children will be able to apply their understanding of proportion in new contexts and hone their skills through a variety of fun and challenging activities.

Each of the lessons within this Fractions Year 5 pack contains:

  • a detailed lesson plan with differentiated activities
  • a slideshow for the teaching input
  • a range of printable resources for independent learning activities
  • answer sheets where necessary

Fractions Year 5: Percentage and Proportion

Focussing firstly on what percentages are and how they are equivalent to fractions and decimals, these five fully-prepared lessons provide a firm foundation of knowledge and skills which children can build upon as their understanding of ratio, percentage and proportion grows during Year 5.

A number of strategies are demonstrated which enable children to find percentages using their times tables and place value knowledge. There are opportunities to read and interpret statistics and charts where data is given as percentages. Children will also begin to learn how any percentage may be found by first calculating what one per cent of an amount is.

  • a detailed lesson plan with differentiated activities
  • a slideshow for the teaching input
  • a range of printable resources for independent learning activities
  • answer sheets where necessary
