Space: History | Galileo and the Telescope
This Galileo KS2 History lesson explores the birth of modern astronomy with your class as they learn who Galileo was and how Galileo used the telescope to explore the stars.
The lesson starts by giving your class a brief introduction to astronomy in ancient civilisations before finding out how the telescope was first invented by craftsmen to see further than people could see with the lenses used in spectacles. The included slideshow presentation for this lesson then goes on to look at how Galileo used the invention of the telescope to start exploring the stars, and gives your Year 5 or Year 6 class the chance to explore some of the things he discovered.
During their independent learning activities, your class can then answer questions, write a newspaper report or create a playscript to reflect what they have found out about Galileo and the invention of the telescope.
