In this Islamic Art KS2 lesson, your class will begin by recapping on the key features of this genre of art.

Then, children will learn how Islamic art designs often have patterns of interlacing plants, leaves and abstract flowers. Children will use their understanding to design an arabesque motif, which they will then carve into soap. Alternatively, children could use printmaking materials to make a beautiful printed arabesque design.

In this Islamic Art KS2 lesson, your class will begin by exploring the three main areas of Islamic art (architecture, art of the book and art of the object).

Children will then learn about calligraphy as a decorative form of writing or lettering using a pen or brush. They will practise writing their own name using calligraphy pens and will then have a go at recreating the letters of the Arabic alphabet using calligraphy.

In this Islamic Art KS2 lesson, children will begin by looking at images of Islamic buildings and seeing if they can identify their key features.

Children will then find out about six of the key features of Islamic architecture: minarets, muqarnas, multifoil arches, domes, geometric patterns and stained glass. Children will use their sketchbooks to record examples of these they find in photographs of Islamic buildings. Alternatively, children could use an online CAD program to design their own special Islamic building which contains these key features.

This Islamic Art KS2 lesson is all about stained glass and how it is used in some special Islamic buildings to show their importance and to create a beautiful environment. After a warm-up activity in which children search for patterns around their classroom, children will look at examples of Islamic stained glass and will find out about its key features.

Children will then bring together their understanding of Islamic art to design their own stained glass window featuring a bold, geometric pattern. They will then use either drawing pens and colouring pencils or acetate sheets and coloured pens to bring their design to life!
