What does PSHE stand for in primary school?
PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education. In primary schools, PSHE helps children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to manage their wellbeing, build positive relationships, make informed decisions and prepare for life in the wider world.
What is PSHE in primary schools?
PSHE is an area of learning that supports childrenās personal, social, health and economic development. Primary PSHE can include topics such as healthy lifestyles, social awareness, healthy relationships, self and emotional wellbeing, economic wellbeing and aspirations, and decision-making and risk.
Is PSHE compulsory in primary schools?
PSHE as a whole is a non-statutory subject in maintained schools in England, although the Department for Education states that all schools should teach it. However, Relationships Education is compulsory in primary schools, and Health Education is compulsory in state-funded primary schools. The revised statutory Relationships Education and Health Education guidance came into effect on 1 September 2026.
Is PSHE part of the primary National Curriculum?
PSHE is not one of the statutory National Curriculum subjects in England. However, primary schools must provide Relationships Education and, in state-funded schools, Health Education. Schools have flexibility over how they organise their wider PSHE curriculum and can adapt their provision to the needs of their pupils and community.
What should a primary PSHE curriculum include?
A broad primary PSHE curriculum can help children learn about relationships, physical and mental health, emotional wellbeing, staying safe, managing risk, money and economic wellbeing, aspirations, responsibilities and life in the wider world. Schools should ensure their provision incorporates the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and, where applicable, Health Education.
What is the difference between PSHE and RSE?
PSHE is a broad area of learning covering personal, social, health and economic education. Relationships Education forms part of this wider provision at primary level. Primary schools may also choose to teach age-appropriate sex education beyond the content covered through Relationships Education and the science curriculum, but this additional sex education is not compulsory.
