HS2: Persuasive Writing

In this sequence of six lessons, your KS2 class will begin by finding out all about the HS2 project. They will read a detailed non-fiction text about it and, by answering a range of questions, will develop their reading comprehension skills. Then, the children will read the opinions of various people and identify arguments in favour and in opposition to the HS2 project. In the next lesson of the scheme, your Year 6 class will then analyse a model persuasive text and identify its key features. They will then practise using some of the language features in their own writing after a shared writing session. At the end of the unit, children will bring together everything they have learned to plan and write their own persuasive text about HS2 containing the key features of this text type. They will read each other's writing and evaluate it against the success criteria for quality persuasive writing.

They will predict whether various groups of people would be likely to support or oppose the project and their reasons why. The children will then read a series of opinions about the project and will identify the for and against arguments made, which they will record using bullet points in a table. At the end of the lesson, children will start to think about their own opinion and will start to use the language of persuasion to justify their viewpoint.

Your Year 6 class will be taken through each feature in turn and will discuss why it is needed in a persuasive text. They will then work independently to write either the next one or two paragraphs. At the end of the lesson, children will read each other's writing and feed back to each other what was effective and areas to work on.
