In this first lesson, children will learn about ‘The Story of Nian’ and discover how Lunar New Year traditions originated. They will then retell the tale using story cards or their own words. In the alternative activity, children will enjoy designing and making their own Chinese lantern.
This lesson introduces your class to the Chinese Zodiac. They will find out how each year got its name, and discover the different personalities of each animal. Children are then challenged to create their own Chinese Zodiacs and find out the animal for their year of birth.
Children find out all about the various festivities that take place during the Lunar New Year, with a focus on the 15-day celebrations in China, where it is known as the Spring Festival. Activities include writing diary entries, creating a multiple-choice quiz, or making their own dragon puppet!
