Stone Age Boy

Becoming Familiar with the Story

Introduce your Year 3 class to the wonderful 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura in this first lesson.

First, children are challenged to predict what the story might be about by analysing the front cover, some key words and phrases from the text, and the blurb. After reading the book together as a class, children then demonstrate their knowledge of the text by ordering story strips, or in the alternative activity provided, answering questions about the main characters and events within the story.

Comprehension

Assess your children's comprehension of the book in more depth with this second lesson in this Stone Age Boy Planning Pack.

After discussing the events of 'Stone Age Boy' and then re-reading the book again as a class, children answer some multiple choice questions together. During their independent activities, their knowledge and understanding of the book is further tested with differentiated comprehension questions. In the alternative activity, children are challenged to 'hunt and gather' questions to answer!

Using Direct Speech

In this lesson, now that they are familiar with the text, children will focus on the two main characters, and imagine what Om and the boy might say to each other if they spoke the same language!

As a class, children will first explore where inverted commas, capital letters, commas and closing punctuation need to go in different sentences involving speech. In their independent activities, they are challenged to add speech punctuation to given sentences, or in the alternative activity, they work in pairs to write a short conversation between Om and the boy, using direct speech.

Descriptive Language

Your Year 3 class will learn about the importance of using descriptive language in their writing using this Stone Age Boy lesson plan.

Together, children discuss and identify some of the word classes used in descriptive writing (focusing on adjectives, verbs, adverbs and prepositions), before applying this knowledge in their independent activities, when they are challenged to write descriptions of settings similar to those in 'Stone Age Boy'.
