Within these six lessons your KS1 class will read the story of 'Zog' and sequence the story. They will use their learning to amend or write several sets of instructions throughout the scheme, working up to writing a set of instructions for Sir Gadabout on how to become a flying doctor.

Lesson 1
Story Sequencing
Kick off this topic by reading the story of 'Zog' by Julia Donaldson with your class and discussing the story together.

Lesson 2
Oral Instructions
Start your KS1 Instructions study by exploring oral instructions with your class. Challenge the children to listen carefully to oral instructions with increasing detail and number of steps. Once the children have got the hang of following oral instructions, discuss how you should deliver oral instructions with clarity and precision. The children can then help Madam Dragon from the story deliver a set of oral instructions on how to fly.

Lesson 3
Imperative Verbs
In this Imperative Verbs KS1 lesson, your class will learn that bossy words, or imperative verbs, are a very important feature of instructions.
As a class, children will first identify and then generate their own imperative verbs for a set of given instructions. In their independent activities, they will step into the shoes of Madam Dragon and create a set of instructions on how a dragon can become a 'champion roarer', choosing and using effective verbs.

Lesson 4
Time Adverbials
Use this Time Adverbials KS1 lesson to teach your children how time adverbials can be used within instructions to help the reader understand the order of the tasks.
After looking at a range of different time adverbials as a class, and the importance of choosing the correct one for each instruction, children will progress to their individual activities. Here they are tasked to add appropriate time adverbials to a set of instructions, or are challenged to order a set of muddled instructions using the time adverbials to help them.

Lesson 5
Features of Instructions
This penultimate lesson explores and identifies key features of instructions and how they are laid out on the page. Your class will use this in the final lesson to write a set of instructions for Sir Gadabout on how to be a flying doctor.
Your class will be challenged to identify and discuss why different features are important to include as well as effective layouts on the page. There are model texts for them to read and explore as well as a range of challenging, differentiated activities for the children to test their understanding.

Lesson 6
How to be a Flying Doctor
In this final lesson your KS1 class will consolidate all they have learnt up to this point and write a final set of instructions as they pretend to be Princess Pearl. They will need to write a set of instructions on how to be a flying doctor for Sir Gadabout, thinking carefully about the equipment that he will need and how they can care for their new patients.
Using the included printable writing frames and resources to support them your Year 1 or Year 2 class can write their own set of instructions using the features studied in the previous lessons.
