They will think about different materials used to make pencil cases and the different ways they are opened and closed. Your class will learn how to use a variety of stitches including running stitch, whip stitch and back stitch, as well as how to decorate their pencil case creations!

Lesson 1
Investigating
In this first lesson, children will examine and describe a variety of pencil cases, identifying the key features and discussing the purpose of these features. Children will further analyse a range of pencil cases in their independent activities.

Lesson 2
Sewing Stitches
In this practical lesson, children will learn about a variety of hand-sewing stitches (running stitch, whipstitch and backstitch), then practise joining pieces of scrap material using different hand-sewing stitches.

Lesson 3
Fastenings
Children will learn how zips, buttons, poppers and toggles may be used to fasten pencil cases. In their independent activities, they either practise sewing buttons and button holes, or sewing and attaching toggles and loops.
