#Lesson1FoodGroups
In this Food Groups KS2 DT lesson, your Year 3 class will explore each of the different food groups, finding out which types of food each contains and how much of each they should be eating to form a healthy diet. They will then start to relate this to sandwiches and consider which ingredients comprise a healthy, balanced sandwich.
During their independent learning time, they can then carry out a survey to find out about the class' favourite sandwiches and convert their tally charts into graphs. Alternatively, they can design a healthy menu for a sandwich shop!
This Food Groups KS2 planning pack contains all the ingredients you need to teach this fun and informative lesson, including a detailed lesson plan, a slideshow for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable teaching resources.
What's included:

#Lesson2TasteandTest
In this mouthwatering lesson, your Year 3 children will have the chance to taste test lots of different breads and sandwich fillings! During the whole-class teaching input, the included slideshow presentation asks children to think about some different breads they have eaten before and what they were like. They will then spend some time generating some adjectives to describe the taste, smell, texture and appearance of food.
Then comes the fun bit! Your class will have the chance to taste test some different breads and/or sandwiches, noting down their thoughts about the taste, texture, smell and appearance of each item.

#Lesson3SandwichDesign
Your Year 3 class will complete as sandwich design in this DT lesson, thinking about what they know about making a healthy sandwich and deciding who they will be making their sandwich for. The included slideshow presentation starts by giving some suggestions as to which kind of occasion they will design their sandwich for, then moves on to look at how to write clear and effective instructions. They will also recap what makes a healthy sandwich.
During their independent learning time, they can then design a sandwich, choosing the filling and bread type, listing ingredients and processes, and drawing an exploded diagram of their sandwich design.

#Lesson4SandwichChefs
The lesson they've been waiting for! After going through the included slideshow presentation to check your Year 3 children understand what they need to do and how they can work safely with food, your class will have the chance to bring their healthy sandwich designs to life.
Children are encouraged to follow their designs from the previous lesson to make their sandwiches, thinking about following their instructions as well as how to present their sandwich so that it looks appealing.
Please note that, due to the practical nature of this lesson, worksheets are not necessary and are therefore not included. Children may refer to completed worksheets from previous lessons. A lesson plan and slideshow are included in the download.
