Writing Magic Spells

This five-lesson English scheme of work for Year 1 is themed around magic. Your class will read, discuss, perform and write magic spells and potions. The series of lessons gives your class the opportunity to develop their application of phonic skills as they get creative writing their own spells and potions.

Reading Spells and Potions

The first lesson in this series of Year 1 English lessons starts by getting your class to make connections between the information they know about witches and wizards. They will be encouraged to think about and discuss witches and wizards they have encountered in books, magazines, TV shows and films. They will then read and discuss some spells and potions shared on the slides and printable teaching resources.

Performing Spells

The second lesson in this series challenges your class to perform rhyming spells and to come up with ways to improve their performances. Your class will be encouraged to think about their fluency, expression and other elements of their performances in this engaging English lesson.

The third lesson in this Writing Magic Spells series of lessons will get your class using their phonic knowledge to complete spells and potions. Your class will use the context, rhyme and picture clues to work out missing words.
