This free mini-scheme will give your class the chance to make paper toys. They will practise the important skill of cutting whilst they make easy paper toys. Your children will make a range of different paper toys, and have the opportunity to design and create some mind-boggling optical illusions!

Cutting Skills Printables
The lesson begins by looking at different types of scissors and their uses. Children then discuss the safety aspects of using scissors before putting their skills to the test by cutting straight, zigzag and wavy lines as accurately as they can. This lesson contains cutting skills printables so the children can apply their skills in independent activities where they cut out a range of shapes to create a house, a fruit basket or a slice of pizza! Alternatively, children can practise the skills of folding and cutting through several layers of paper by making animal-themed paper chains.

Papercraft Animals!
In this papercraft animals lesson, children look at a selection of different paper toys and discuss both how they work and how they can be made. They will either choose a Challenge Card and follow the instructions on it to create their own paper toy. Or alternatively, children can work in small groups and use the set of Zoo Animals Templates to create their very own menagerie!

Illusions!
In this final lesson of this free making paper toys series, your children will explore an optical illusion toy – the thaumatrope, or ‘wonder turner’. They will find out how they work, as well as how to create one using their own designs. In the alternate activity, children can design and create another optical illusion toy – the Magic Spinning Top.
