Over the course of this series of lessons, your pupils will learn how cotton cloth is manufactured, then go on to look at how textiles like this are used to make clothes and other items. As they learn about the design and manufacturing processes of the fashion industry, they'll also develop their own skills designing and making a fashionable product of their own: a hand- or machine-stitched drawstring bag!

These lessons are ideal to teach in sequence and will help get your class confident with sewing, but every lesson also includes a standalone, alternative activity – ideal if you only want to teach one or two lessons.

This scheme of work is designed to address a number of Design and Technology KS2 National Curriculum objectives. By the end of this KS2 DT unit, pupils will have developed designs by sketching, discussing and using pattern pieces. They will have developed their cutting, joining and finishing skills – and evaluated their finished products.

Discover how cotton is made into fabric, and how fabrics are used to make a variety of products.

In this, the first of six lessons in the 'Fashion and Textiles' DT scheme of work for upper KS2, children will take a look at one of the first stages of manufacturing in the textile industry: how cotton is made into fabric. They'll go on to look at how cotton cloth is then used in the construction of a variety of products, and consider how a variety of different textiles are used in different ways due to their properties. Children will also begin to look at how textiles such as cotton fabric are joined by sewing, gluing, riveting or with fasteners e.g. zips or laces.

As with all of the DT lessons in this scheme of work, there's a choice of activities included and a range of printable resources to support learning. For this lesson, there are worksheets and activity cards which children may use to show what they have learnt about how cotton is made into cloth, or about the properties of textiles used in products they examine.

Find out about the design process for products made using textiles, then explore ways in which hand-sewing and machine-sewing stitches are used to join and decorate products.

In this, the second of six lessons in 'Fashion and Textiles' for KS2, children will continue to learn about the process of design and manufacture in the textiles industry. The included slides challenge them to consider how flat pattern pieces are joined by stitching. They'll go on to practice a variety of hand-sewing stitches. Worksheets and handy sewing stitch pattern cards are included to help them get to grips with joining, reinforcing and decorating products.

In this lesson (the third of six in 'Fashion and Textiles' for KS2), children will continue to learn about the process of design and manufacture in the textile industry. The included slides show how pattern pieces are made, then used to make fabric pieces which can be joined to make a finished product. They'll then design and mark up their own pattern pieces for a drawstring bag which they'll go on to make and evaluate in the subsequent lessons.

Teacher's notes and a variety of printable resources are included to make teaching sewing easier and to support your pupils as they develop their designs.

Learn about the process of transferring a design to fabric using pattern pieces, then mark and cut fabric for a drawstring bag.

This is the fourth of six lessons in 'Fashion and Textiles' – a KS2 Design and Technology scheme of work. In this lesson, your pupils will begin by learning more about the process of manufacturing garments and other textile products using pattern pieces. They'll then use their own pattern pieces (created during the previous lesson) to mark up and cut out fabric pieces for a drawstring bag of their own design.

The included slides and teacher's notes will help you explain the process clearly, and support your pupils as they begin constructing their own products.

As with all of the lessons in this scheme of work, the slides clearly explain the process, and the included teacher's notes and printable resources will help children to develop their skills of joining and reinforcing textiles by sewing stitches.

Finish making a hand-sewn drawstring bag by hemming, adding decoration and finishing by adding other functional details.

This is the final lesson in 'Fashion and Textiles' – a Design and technology scheme of work for upper KS2. In this lesson, children will finish making hand-sewn drawstring bags of their own design by hemming and decorating them. Depending on their designs and the choices you've made during previous lessons, they may also add other details to reinforce or improve their products.

The slides show various ways in which your pupils' products can be finished and decorated, and the printable resources include evaluation cards to help children reflect on their textiles design learning throughout these lessons.
