Challenge your Year 1 or Year 2 class to explore seaside holidays in the past with this ready-to-teach lesson pack. Your KS1 children will investigate what seaside holidays are like today before exploring Victorian seaside holidays, including why they became popular, and how they have changed since. Your class will also compare seaside holidays now to seaside holidays in the past, discussing the similarities and differences between them.

A Knowledge Organiser is available to support the learning in this scheme. It is included in the Complete Series download or can be purchased individually.

After finding out about how Victorians relaxed on the beach, took walks along the promenade, visited the pier, rode donkeys, bathed in the sea and watched Punch and Judy shows (amongst other activities), your class will imagine that they are living in the Victorian era, and plan a day trip to the seaside, listing and explaining all of the activities they want to do.

This Victorian seaside holidays lesson pack includes an easy-to-follow plan and an informative set of PDF slides, as well as differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.

They will discover that it was the invention of the steam train in the Victorian era that meant people could travel to the coast both quickly and cheaply. Children will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of this through a range of activities, including sorting true and false statements, completing cloze paragraphs and answering questions.

A detailed plan, an engaging set of PDF slides, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources are all included in this ready-to-teach Seaside Holidays in the Past lesson pack.

In this lesson, children will explore the difference between beyond living memory and within living memory, and then explore seaside holidays in the 1950s.

Children will watch films of seaside holidays from that era, and discuss what they have learnt from these sources. In the alternative activity provided, children conduct a survey amongst their parents and grandparents to find out about their childhood experiences of seaside holidays.

Everything you need for a successful lesson is included in this pack - an easy-to-follow plan, a set of PDF slides for the teaching input, and a range of printable resources.

They will consider aspects such as travel, clothes, food and entertainment. In their independent activities, children will compare and contrast photographs from then and now, identifying similarities and differences. In the alternative activity, children use a Venn diagram to organise statements that refer to Victorian seaside holidays, seaside holidays today, or both.
