Planning Year 1 English
When planning English in Year 1, give children regular opportunities to develop reading, writing and spoken language skills through engaging texts, discussion and purposeful activities. Year 1 English planning should help children build confidence with early reading and comprehension, compose and write simple sentences, develop spelling and handwriting, and begin to use grammar and punctuation accurately.
Build these skills progressively across the year, giving children opportunities to explore stories, non-fiction and poetry before applying what they have learned in their own writing. Reading, vocabulary, speaking and listening can be woven throughout Year 1 English lessons, while regular opportunities to plan, write, discuss and improve their work help children become increasingly confident and independent readers and writers.
