Within these six lessons your KS1 class will read the story of 'Zog' and sequence the story. They will then use the different scenes in the story to build their knowledge and understanding of instructions and how and why they are written. Different lessons focus on different features of instructions, including imperative verbs, time adverbials, and structural features. They will use their learning to amend or write several sets of instructions throughout the scheme, working up to writing a set of instructions for Sir Gadabout on how to become a flying doctor.

Start your KS1 Instructions study by exploring oral instructions with your class. Challenge the children to listen carefully to oral instructions with increasing detail and number of steps. Once the children have got the hang of following oral instructions, discuss how you should deliver oral instructions with clarity and precision. The children can then help Madam Dragon from the story deliver a set of oral instructions on how to fly.

In this Imperative Verbs KS1 lesson, your class will learn that bossy words, or imperative verbs, are a very important feature of instructions.

As a class, children will first identify and then generate their own imperative verbs for a set of given instructions. In their independent activities, they will step into the shoes of Madam Dragon and create a set of instructions on how a dragon can become a 'champion roarer', choosing and using effective verbs.

They will need to write a set of instructions on how to be a flying doctor for Sir Gadabout, thinking carefully about the equipment that he will need and how they can care for their new patients.

Using the included printable writing frames and resources to support them your Year 1 or Year 2 class can write their own set of instructions using the features studied in the previous lessons.
