In this sequence of six lessons, your KS2 class will begin by finding out all about the HS2 project. They will read a detailed non-fiction text about it and, by answering a range of questions, will develop their reading comprehension skills. Then, the children will read the opinions of various people and identify arguments in favour and in opposition to the HS2 project. In the next lesson of the scheme, your Year 6 class will then analyse a model persuasive text and identify its key features. They will then practise using some of the language features in their own writing after a shared writing session. At the end of the unit, children will bring together everything they have learned to plan and write their own persuasive text about HS2 containing the key features of this text type. They will read each other's writing and evaluate it against the success criteria for quality persuasive writing.

This six-lesson Persuasive Writing Year 6 English Planning Pack takes a real-life issue and engages children in debate over whether it is a good or bad idea. After finding out all about HS2 and weighing up the arguments for and against it, children will be inspired to write with enthusiasm to persuade others about their point of view.

Looking for more persuasive writing resources? Holes: Persuasive Writing English pack is packed with engaging and fun activities based on Louis Sachar's book 'Holes'. Children will explore the different persuasive techniques they can use in their writing before applying them in different contexts, including speeches, brochures and adverts.
