Cooking in Wartime Britain

A Taste of the Past

Have you ever wondered what people ate during World War Two? Throughout the war, food was rationed to make sure everyone got a fair share, so people had to get really creative with the limited ingredients available. In fact, people made some very clever, tasty dishes that kept bellies full and spirits high. You’ll be amazed at how people turned simple ingredients into comforting meals, from easy savoury dinners to inventive desserts!

Creativity in Wartime Kitchens

During WW2, British families were encouraged to grow their own food, make do with less and get creative in the kitchen. Even the Ministry of Food stepped in with advice on how to prepare and cook nutritious meals using seaonal ingredients that were grown locally. That’s where the famous slogan “Dig for Victory” came in—people were urged to grow their own vegetables and herbs in any space they had, from gardens to window boxes. Talk about fresh produce!

Simple Savoury Dishes

So, what was for dinner during WW2? Without access to much meat, people turned to dishes where vegetables were the main feature. Some examples of satisfying savoury wartime recipes, include:

Lord Woolton Pie
A vegetable pie filled with diced potatoes, carrots, turnips, and leeks. The pie filling was thickened with oats and topped with a basic pastry crust.

Cauliflower Pie
Cauliflower was easy to grow, so this dish became a favorite. It featured boiled cauliflower mixed with breadcrumbs, milk and grated cheese.

Green Pea Loaf
Green peas were another ingredient that found their way into everything. Mashed green peas were combined with breadcrumbs, butter and chopped onions. It was often topped with tomato soup!

Wartime Desserts

Carrot biscuits were a popular treat which used grated carrots to add a natural sweetness. This made these biscuits a healthy sweet treat, without a lot of sugar.

Carrot Fudge
For an after-dinner treat, carrot fudge also became a favourite. It wasn’t quite fudge, but it was a sweet, tasty dessert that made the most of seasonal ingredients.
