This seven-lesson North America scheme introduces pupils to the continent’s location and countries before exploring its diverse climate zones and key physical and human features. Children investigate capital cities and population data, learn how time zones and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) work, and compare regions using geographical evidence. The scheme concludes by examining how geography shapes life across the continent, considering how climate, landscape and location influence where people live and work.

Each of the seven ready-to-teach lessons includes a detailed plan, a set of engaging and informative PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources to support your class in their independent learning.

A Knowledge Organiser is available to support the learning in this scheme. It is included in the Complete Series download or can be purchased individually.

Lesson 1: The Countries

In this first lesson, children become familiar with North America, locating the continent on a world map and identifying the surrounding oceans, neighbouring continent and hemisphere.

They learn that North America is made up of 23 countries, which can be grouped into mainland countries and island nations. Your class then apply this knowledge in their independent activities where they label maps of the continent.

Everything you need for this KS2 Geography lesson is included in the downloadable pack: an easy-to-follow plan, a set of PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Countries Word Bank
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Riddle Cards
  • Flag Cards
  • North America Map

Lesson 2: Climates

In this lesson, children explore the range of climate zones found across North America. They use a climate zone map to identify areas such as Arctic, temperate, tropical and desert regions, and consider how location affects climate.

In their independent activities, children match climate graphs and descriptions to different places in North America, applying their understanding to interpret and compare climate patterns accurately.

Designed to save you time, this KS2 Geography lesson pack includes a full plan, ready-made PDF slides and differentiated resources to support every learner.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Puzzle Packs
  • Location Cards
  • Challenge Cards

Lesson 3: Features

In this lesson, children explore important physical and human features of North America. They learn the difference between physical and human features and use maps and images to locate and classify a range of landmarks across the continent.

Through discussion, they consider how physical features are formed and why human features are built. In their independent work, children choose a geographical feature to investigate using the resources provided, locating it, classifying it and explaining its significance.

This ready-to-teach KS2 Geography lesson pack includes a detailed plan, informative PDF slides, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Challenge Cards
  • Picture Cards
  • Information Sheet

Lesson 4: Capital Cities

In this lesson, children explore whether a capital city is always the largest city in its country. They compare North American capitals using population and area data, learning that size can be measured in different ways.

In their independent work, children use the Capital Fact Cards provided to analyse data, identify patterns and reach an evidence-based conclusion to the enquiry question.

Inside the downloadable pack, you’ll find a comprehensive lesson plan, PDF teaching slides, differentiated tasks and all the printable resources needed for independent learning.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Capital Fact Cards
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Investigation Cards

Lesson 5: Time Zones

In this lesson, children explore how time zones work and why North America has more than one. They learn about Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), how the Earth’s rotation affects local time, and how to calculate time differences using GMT numbers.

In their independent work, children use a time zone map to calculate and compare local times in different cities, identify patterns in time differences and explain why the continent needs multiple time zones.

This lesson pack contains an easy-to-follow plan, engaging PDF slides for teaching input, differentiated activities and supporting printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • North America Time Zone Map
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Character Cards
  • Time Cards
  • Recording Sheet: Comparing Cities

Lesson 6: Comparing Locations

In this lesson, children compare their local area in the UK with regions in North America using human and physical geography. They revisit the difference between human and physical features and explore how aspects such as climate, landscape, settlement type and population can be used to compare places.

In their independent work, children analyse information about a chosen North American region, identify similarities and differences with the local area and use geographical evidence to explain their conclusions.

This ready-to-teach KS2 Geography lesson pack includes a detailed plan, informative PDF slides, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources.

Lesson 7: Country Study

In this final lesson, children investigate how geography shapes life in a North American country. They explore how location, climate and landscape influence settlement patterns and economic activity, using a cause-and-effect model to link physical and human geography.

In their independent work, children analyse information about a chosen country, explain how geographical factors affect where people live and work, and use evidence to justify their conclusions.
