What's the difference between seasonal weather and daily weather? How does the weather change during each season in the United Kingdom? Seasonal vs Daily Weather

What's the weather typically like during spring, summer, autumn or winter? Is it the same every day? How does it vary? These are the questions your children will consider in this lesson, as well as thinking about how likely we are to experience different weather types during each season. Following this, challenge them to develop their weather vocabulary as they either prepare a weather diary to be completed over several weeks, or collect and organise describing words for weather during different months.

Inland vs Coastal Weather

Take a closer look at the changeable British weather! The included slides with this lesson show simple pictograms for children to analyse and interpret as they discover some weather and climate differences between coastal and inland parts of the UK. After that, there's a choice of included activities and weather worksheets where children may either draw/add to weather pictograms, or draw and describe weather in one or more regions of the United Kingdom.

Forecasts

Consider how weather affects what we wear and the things we can do, then go on to look at weather forecasts, considering why they are so helpful. There's also opportunities for children to read and use simple positional language as well as some technical weather vocabulary, as they either make weather maps or prepare and perform their own weather forecasts!

World Weather

Challenge children to consider similarities and differences between weather in the UK and in other parts of the world. Focusing on three different parts of the world, the included slides explain differences between weather and climate conditions in equatorial and polar regions. After that, it's up to you to decide which of the two included activities your class undertake! Either way, they'll learn more about weather in other parts of the world, and how it affects human behaviour.

Take a trip to Singapore with the included slides, and challenge children to notice and describe weather differences as they study various images of the city state. After that, challenge children to undertake any one of a number of included, differentiated activities where they will draw and describe weather in equatorial regions, or consider how it affects human behaviour.

Polar Regions

Take another trip to a far-flung place! This time: the Arctic Circle city of Tromsø, Norway. As they learn about the extraordinary conditions in polar regions, children are challenged to consider what daily life might be like for people living in the frozen city, including some of the winter weather leisure activities they might enjoy! There's a choice of activities, too - where children can either draw and write to express their ideas, or create polar region works of art.
