They will start by exploring China's location and its many diverse physical features, before going on to learn about the country’s economic growth and the effect this has had on both the people and the land. Finally, they will explore the famous attractions and culture of China. Lesson 1

The Location of China

In this Location of China lesson for KS2, your Year 5 or Year 6 children will learn where in the world China is and explore its political geography. They will learn that China is the most populous country in the world, look at the different regions of China, and begin to understand the differences between them. Children will find out what a megacity is, and how many of these are in China.

They will then bring all of this knowledge and understanding together in their independent work through a variety of differentiated activities.

Lesson 2

Physical Geography

In this lesson, your KS2 children will explore the physical geography of China. They will explore three vastly different landscapes in China (mountainous, river, desert), exploring their features and characteristics. They will also explore the impact of human development on the physical geography of these areas.

In their independent activities, children look at the causes, effects and possible solutions for desertification. In the alternate activity, they explore the positive and negative impact of the Three Gorges Dam on China.

Economic Growth

In this lesson, your KS2 children will find out about the economic growth of China, what this means and the impact economic growth has had on the country and its population, both positive and negative.

During their independent activities, children will look in more detail at China’s world exports. Or, in the 'Fancy Something Different?' activity, children will explore the effect that economic growth has had on air pollution in the country.

The Great Wall of China

This Great Wall of China KS2 Geography lesson starts by exploring what a tourist attraction is before looking in more detail at China's most popular tourist attraction – the Great Wall of China. They will find out when, where, how and why it was built, as well as discussing the landmark’s current condition and usage.

During their independent work, children will have the chance to produce a guidebook for a tourist company who arranges visits for schools to see the Great Wall of China. Alternatively, they can investigate another popular Chinese tourist attraction from a given set of research cards.

Chinese Culture

In this Chinese Culture lesson for KS2, your Year 5/6 children will explore different aspects of Chinese culture. In groups, they will spend some time researching areas such as food and drink, leisure, sport and traditions, before sharing their knowledge with one another and taking part in a class quiz!

Alternatively, children research what education and schools are like in China, and then hold a class discussion to debate the question: Should our education system be more like China’s?
