Children will first look at and describe some pictures of modern-day hospitals, before exploring what hospitals and nursing used to be like in the Victorian era. They will then find out about the early life of Florence Nightingale, and her decision to become a nurse. Children will learn about the changes she made to a hospital she ran during the Crimean War, and how she continued to campaign to improve the hygiene and care in hospitals throughout her life. In their independent activities, your class will apply their knowledge of the differences Florence Nightingale’s work made to hospitals and their patients. In the alternative activity, children are challenged to complete a timeline of the important events in her life.
