Making Predictions
Introduce your Year 1 children to the wonderful book, The Great Pet Sale by Mick Inkpen, and encourage them to make predictions about what they think the story will entail, based on the clues they find!
As a class, you will look at and discuss the title, cover images, the blurb, and the first page of the book. Children are tasked to look for clues as to what the story will be about, and will use what they find to make their predictions. In the alternative activity, children work in small groups to sort the provided Prediction Cards into 'likely' or 'not likely' piles, and use reasoning to explain their choices.

Children are encouraged to share both their opinions and understanding of the story, before retelling it in their independent activities, with the aid of picture prompts. Answering Questions

Children will first share what they remember about the plot and the characters within the story, before you read the book together again. Planning a Recount
In this lesson, children will imagine that they have been on a trip to the pet shop featured in Mick Inkpen's book, The Great Pet Sale.
As a class, they will discuss what the shop was like, what animals they saw, and whether they bought an animal. Children will then use this information to complete a recount plan, using the provided structured sheet. Writing a Recount
In this final lesson, children will use their knowledge of the events in the book, The Great Pet Sale, to write a recount of an imagined trip to the pet shop.
After recapping on what a recount is, you will look at an example as a class. Together, you will identify and discuss the features that the children need to use in their own writing, including time conjunctions, personal pronouns and past tense verbs. Using this information and their plans from the previous lesson, children will then write their own recounts of a trip to the pet shop.
