Use this The Great Pet Sale Resources KS1 English Pack to take your Year 1 class on a trip to the pet shop to meet lots of unusual animals (including one very convincing little rat!).

After exploring the front cover, the blurb and the first page of The Great Pet Sale, children will make predictions as to what they think the book will be about. Together as a class you will then read the book, and over the next two lessons, children will show their understanding by retelling the story and answering comprehension questions. Using their knowledge of the book, children are then challenged to plan and write a fictional recount about their own visit to the great pet sale!

Each of the lessons in this The Great Pet Sale Resources Pack includes an easy-to-follow plan, a set of engaging slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.

Lesson 1

Making Predictions

Introduce your Year 1 children to the wonderful book, The Great Pet Sale by Mick Inkpen, and encourage them to make predictions about what they think the story will entail, based on the clues they find!

As a class, you will look at and discuss the title, cover images, the blurb, and the first page of the book. Children are tasked to look for clues as to what the story will be about, and will use what they find to make their predictions. In the alternative activity, children work in small groups to sort the provided Prediction Cards into 'likely' or 'not likely' piles, and use reasoning to explain their choices.

What's included:

Children will then use this information to complete a recount plan, using the provided structured sheet. In the alternative suggested activity, children are challenged to put themselves in the rat's shoes and improve a given recount plan of its day.

In this The Great Pet Sale Lesson Plan Pack you will find a set of engaging slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable worksheets, as well as an easy-to-follow plan.

Lesson 5

Writing a Recount

In this final lesson, children will use their knowledge of the events in the book, The Great Pet Sale, to write a recount of an imagined trip to the pet shop.

After recapping on what a recount is, you will look at an example as a class. Together, you will identify and discuss the features that the children need to use in their own writing, including time conjunctions, personal pronouns and past tense verbs. Using this information and their plans from the previous lesson, children will then write their own recounts of a trip to the pet shop.

This final The Great Pet Sale Resources Pack includes a detailed plan, an engaging and informative set of slides for the teaching input, as well as differentiated activity ideas.
