LS Lowry - The Complete Series (5 lessons)

Within this five-lesson scheme of work, your class will try their hand at creating tones, tints and shades through colour mixing and using different tools to different effects when creating Lowry's 'matchstick men' figures. The children will use their sketchbooks to record their ideas and evaluate the techniques they learn in each lesson before creating their own, collaborative Lowry-style art.

Your KS2 class will be introduced to LS Lowry and his paintings in this 'Who is LS Lowry?' Art lesson for children in Year 3 and Year 4. They will learn about his life and have in-depth discussions about his paintings using the specially designed website and lesson slides included in this lesson pack.

Using the printable resources the children will be challenged to think carefully about their reaction to Lowry's paintings and answer questions about the paintings themselves. The children will need to look closely and compare the paintings to find key similarities between them.

In this LS Lowry Matchstick Men lesson, your KS2 children will explore the different tools they can use to manipulate paint and create matchstick men like the ones Lowry included in many of his paintings. Using the linked video, the children can see how Lowry would use different paint brushes and even his fingers to create his signature style of figures.

Inspired by this and the discussions they will have had during the lesson input, the children can use the included printable resources to experiment with different tools to paint their own matchstick figures in Lowry's style. Encouraged to use the tools in an imaginative and alternative way, the children can evaluate the tools they have used in their sketchbooks and reflect on which they think was most suitable for the task.

In the third lesson of this series, your class will undertake colour mixing activities as they explore the colours that Lowry used in his paintings. He was famous for having claimed that he only used five paint colours.

As you recap colour mixing with your class, your KS2 children will begin to explore how tones, tints and shades are created to add realistic depths to paintings.

Full of colour mixing activities, this lesson gives your Year 3 or Year 4 class the opportunity to experiment with mixing colours to match ones they have been given or ones they have found in Lowry's paintings, supported by the tints, tones and shades worksheet provided in these printable resources.

Use this Teaching Perspective KS2 Art lesson to explore with your class how LS Lowry makes objects seem nearer or further away in his paintings, including sectioning the landscapes into foreground, mid-ground and background. Discuss how Lowry made the figures and buildings in his paintings smaller and paler as they get further away to show perspective.
