Art in our Community - The Complete Series (6 lessons)

Over the course of six fully prepared lessons, your class will find out about common materials used in sculpture, as well as the skills, tools and techniques needed to turn them into works of art. They will explore the materials and practise the different joining techniques they could use before making a maquette of their final sculpture design, which they will present, analyse and evaluate as a class.

Each lesson pack comes complete with a detailed plan, an engaging and informative set of PDF slides for the teaching input, as well as a range of printable resources to support your class with their independent learning.

In this first lesson, children will explore the meaning of the words ‘sculpture’, ‘sculptor’, ‘figurative’ and ‘abstract’, and look briefly at the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Yayoi Kusama and Antony Gormley, who they may already be familiar with.

As a class, they will then practise analysing a given sculpture by discussing questions about form, material, texture, size, position and purpose, as well as their own personal response to the artwork. Children will continue to apply this skill in their independent work by analysing a range of other figurative and abstract sculptures.

This lesson begins by exploring some of the reasons why we have public art, such as sculptures, and how they can be so important to the communities they are displayed in.

First as a class, and then independently, children will begin to think about ideas for a sculpture for their local community, and investigate different local locations. They will make notes and sketches, and share and discuss their ideas.

In this lesson, children will focus on some of the common materials and joining techniques used in sculpture.

As a class, they will briefly look at techniques that are used, such as modelling, carving, welding and assemblage. Children will then learn what armatures and maquettes are, and why sculptors use them when building and refining their work. In their practical activities, children will explore and evaluate materials and joining techniques they could use to make a maquette.

In this lesson, children will use all of their knowledge and understanding of existing sculptures, materials and techniques to design their own sculpture for their local community.

Together, children will first look at the design process and the questions that they need to think about before independently creating their designs. They will be encouraged to explain how their sculpture will impact the local space and community.

Children first recap on what a maquette is, and discuss some of the reasons why sculptors find it useful to make them.

As a class, they then look at a step-by-step example of making a maquette, including the changes and adjustments made during the process. Children are encouraged to look over their designs before they start to make their maquette.

In this final lesson, children begin by analysing some of their completed maquettes as a class, using similar questions that they analysed existing sculptures with in the first lesson.

They then either self-evaluate their work using prompt questions in groups or pairs, or in the FSD? activity, they present their maquette to a group of visitors, who are encouraged to ask them given evaluative questions about their work.
