A Sense of Place - The Complete Series (6 lessons)

The first lesson in this series gives your class the chance to use viewfinders to find interesting views and features in a local environment. They will have fun finding and recording a variety of patterns and views as a way of gathering visual ideas for further artwork.

Introduce your class to some of the most famous landscape artists of all time, such as Constable, Turner, Sisley and Gainsborough, as they study and compare a variety of images that use different methods and approaches to portray the environment around them.

This lesson looks at how artists use perspective to draw the viewer into the image, exploring some different examples of the methods landscape artists use to do this. The slides also give some practical advice for how your class can translate and copy an image using a grid to ensure that the perspective and distance are correct.

This lesson allows your class to pool together all the ideas they have gathered so far to design their own piece of landscape artwork. Thinking about all they have learned, they will choose the scene they want to portray, the style and colours they would like to use and how they will incorporate perspective into their artwork.

Using their designs for landscapes, your class will get the chance to put their artistic skills to the test as they create the landscape artwork they have planned and designed. Looking at their sketched designs, they will learn how to translate this into a full-sized piece of artwork.
