Over the course of this five-lesson ‘Let’s Use Pounds and Pence’ Complete Series, allow your class to test and develop their reasoning skills when finding change and problem solving with money.
Children are challenged to recognise coins and banknotes, including recognising descriptions of the money. They are challenged to order and identify money from a group and use their understanding and reasoning skills to begin to identify equivalent amounts of money.
Have your class practise their adding strategies while calculating the total amounts of a group of pounds or pence. Challenge the children to add various coins and notes together to reach a total amount and compare these amounts with each other.
Challenge your class to think about how they can make the same amount of money using different combinations of coins. They are challenged to think about which coins they are using and all the different ways they can reach a desired amount. Create more challenge by limiting their choices of coins to engage them in problem-solving calculations.
Teach your class to recall and use their known subtraction methods, focusing on finding the difference using a number line, to find how much change they should receive after a purchase. Challenge the children to find change from 20p to £2, showing their methods as they calculate the answers.
Help your class consolidate their knowledge of pounds and pence by applying their understanding to various problem-solving contexts. Encourage them to develop their mathematical vocabulary when reasoning with different answers and possibilities as they work their way through different reasoning problems with a partner or group.
