#TheCompleteSeries5lessons

Over the course of the five lessons in this ‘Can we link addition and subtraction?’ Complete Series, children use number facts, number lines, hundred squares and other methods to solve number sentences.

#Lesson1Numberfactsto20

Challenge your class to answer addition and subtraction questions as they collect parts of their rocket and the important launch code. Your class will be encouraged to use mental methods when solving the problems, including applying their knowledge of number bonds to ten to complete number bonds to twenty.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Rocket Parts
  • Worksheet
  • Photo Sheet
#Lesson2Usingtheinverse

Challenge your class to prove the answer to their addition and subtraction questions by using the inverse. They will travel around planets as they become confident using inverse operations. Then they will be challenged to get to characters stranded in space and rescue them, before returning them back to base. Your class will be encouraged to use mental methods when solving the problems, including applying their knowledge of number bonds.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Inversion Loops
  • Number Cards
  • Photo Sheet
#Lesson3Derivingfacts

Challenge your class to apply their knowledge of number bonds when deriving facts to one hundred. They will solve problems using a hundred square to work out how many space objects have been found. Your class will be encouraged to think about ways they can write the problem they solved using addition and subtraction number sentences.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Hundred Squares
  • Question Cards
  • Part Part Whole Cards
  • Blank Number Lines
  • Photo Sheet
#Lesson4Roundingandadjusting

Challenge your class to solve addition and subtraction problems using rounding and adjusting. Your class will help the space characters complete their journey along a number line with the fewest number of stops. Initially they will round to the nearest ten before thinking carefully about how their answer needs to be adjusted. Visual clues on the slides will support the children in their understanding of the concept.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Worksheets
  • Number Cards
  • Spinner
  • Rockets
  • Photo Sheets
#Lesson5Wordproblems

In the final lesson of this series your class will have the opportunity to solve a variety of addition and subtraction word problems. They will select the necessary information to write their own number sentences. They then will be able to choose the method they think is most appropriate to solve the problem and help the characters return home from space.
