Lesson 1: The Five Pillars of Islam KS2

This first lesson introduces your class to Islam and the Five Pillars of Islam: Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj. Children will learn about where Muslim communities are around the world and why it can be important to be a part of a community of faith.

During the activity section of the lesson, your class will look at the five pillars of Islam in more detail. They are asked to describe each pillar through pictures or written descriptions. Alternatively, they can research the Five Pillars of Islam before creating a poster.

Lesson 2: Muslim Birth and Naming Ceremonies

This lesson explores what happens when a new baby is born into a Muslim family. They will learn about the seven-day naming ceremony called Tasmiyah and what happens at each stage.

Your class will learn about where names come from and make inferences about their own name. Children will explore some Islamic names and what they represent.

Lesson 3: Muslim Marriages

This lesson teaches your class about the steps involved in a Muslim marriage. They will learn about the traditions and customs for both the bride and the groom. Children will also find out about engagement ceremonies and what Mendhi is.

Lesson 5: The Hajj KS2

This Hajj KS2 lesson explains one of the most important rites of passage in a Muslim person's life. Your class will learn about what a pilgrimage is, what happens on the Hajj and why this pilgrimage is so important to Islamic believers.

This final lesson also comes with a fun End of Unit Quiz to help summarise the children's learning during this unit on Islamic Rites of Passage.
