Weather Patterns - The Complete Series (7 lessons)

As well as lots of opportunities for children to develop their KS1 Geography skills, there are a number of activities where they can express their ideas through writing or creating works of art. All of the lessons include highly-differentiated activities, so you can be sure that there are resources suited to your children – whether you teach Year 1, Year 2, or both!

What's the weather typically like during spring, summer, autumn or winter? Is it the same every day? How does it vary? These are the questions your children will consider in this lesson, as well as thinking about how likely we are to experience different weather types during each season. Following this, challenge them to develop their weather vocabulary as they either prepare a weather diary to be completed over several weeks, or collect and organise describing words for weather during different months.

Take a closer look at the changeable British weather! The included slides with this lesson show simple pictograms for children to analyse and interpret as they discover some weather and climate differences between coastal and inland parts of the UK. After that, there's a choice of included activities and weather worksheets where children may either draw/add to weather pictograms, or draw and describe weather in one or more regions of the United Kingdom.

Consider how weather affects what we wear and the things we can do, then go on to look at weather forecasts, considering why they are so helpful. There's also opportunities for children to read and use simple positional language as well as some technical weather vocabulary, as they either make weather maps or prepare and perform their own weather forecasts!

Challenge children to consider similarities and differences between weather in the UK and in other parts of the world. Focusing on three different parts of the world, the included slides explain differences between weather and climate conditions in equatorial and polar regions. After that, it's up to you to decide which of the two included activities your class undertake! Either way, they'll learn more about weather in other parts of the world, and how it affects human behaviour.

Take a trip to Singapore with the included slides, and challenge children to notice and describe weather differences as they study various images of the city state. After that, challenge children to undertake any one of a number of included, differentiated activities where they will draw and describe weather in equatorial regions, or consider how it affects human behaviour.

Take another trip to a far-flung place! This time: the Arctic Circle city of Tromsø, Norway. As they learn about the extraordinary conditions in polar regions, children are challenged to consider what daily life might be like for people living in the frozen city, including some of the winter weather leisure activities they might enjoy! There's a choice of activities, too - where children can either draw and write to express their ideas, or create polar region works of art.

Give your children opportunities to recap, discuss, and share what they have learned about seasonal and daily weather in different parts of the United Kingdom, and about how different the weather can be in polar and equatorial regions. This final lesson in 'Weather Patterns' includes some great opportunities not only for children to consolidate the knowledge, skills and understanding they've built upon during previous lessons, but also for you to track and assess their geography learning!
