#Lesson1ExistingProducts

In this first lesson, children find out where the tradition of the Christmas stocking is thought to have come from. Before looking at any examples, children are encouraged to think about what we would expect a Christmas stocking to look like. They learn about the importance of both functionality and visual appeal, and discuss which they think is the most important for this type of product. In their independent activities, children analyse a variety of stockings in more detail.

This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Christmas Stocking Cards
  • Compare and Contrast Sheet
#Lesson2ExploringStitches

Children learn how to join two pieces of fabric together in this skills-based lesson. They look at examples of different stitches, and learn how to secure their first and last stitch with a hidden knot. In their independent activities, children explore which stitch they think will be the most suitable for a Christmas stocking. Alternatively, they are encouraged to investigate the statement, “Longer stitches will create a stronger, more secure join than shorter stitches.”

#Lesson3DecoratingFabric

How can we make a Christmas stocking visually appealing? In this lesson, children first discuss the different ways in which sewing skills can be used to make Christmas stockings attractive, and compare and contrast different examples. They then explore how embellishments and the skills of embroidery and appliqué can be used to decorate fabric in the independent activity.

#Lesson4DesignTime

To begin the lesson, children discuss the importance of design criteria. They choose a user for their product, and tailor the design criteria to suit this person’s likes and dislikes. Children are then encouraged to discuss what joining stitches and decorative techniques they are going to use, before carefully planning and designing their Christmas stocking. In the alternative activity, children can design festive bunting for their classroom.

In the alternative activity, children go on a hunt around the classroom and ‘spot’ the various sewing skills used by others. As a class they then discuss how successful each example is.

Thank you so much! The resource is outstanding. I don't usually buy single resources but I estimated that this resource saved me at least six hours of my own time. I highly recommend it. The planning is detailed and well-researched. The teaching pages are well written but the printables are what stood out to me.

Thank you again.

We are so pleased to hear that you have found this scheme of work useful! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, Daniel :-)

Love the product and planning but had to redo all the slides as we need them in powerpoint format to enable us to put our own school stamp on them - eg adding LOs to each slide. This was very time consuming when I was hoping to save time.Wasn't prepared to pay to have them converted as it costs nearly £200 per year
