What should children learn in Year 6 Maths?

In Year 6 Maths, children consolidate the mathematical knowledge and skills they have developed throughout primary school while tackling increasingly complex problems with greater fluency and independence. They work confidently with larger numbers, refine their mental and written calculation methods and deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. Across the Year 6 Maths curriculum, children also develop their knowledge of ratio and proportion, algebra, measurement, geometry and statistics, applying what they know to challenging Year 6 Maths questions and explaining and justifying their mathematical reasoning.

01

Consolidate number and calculation skills

Help children work confidently with numbers up to 10,000,000, including reading, writing, ordering, comparing and rounding numbers and working with negative numbers. Children should use increasingly efficient mental and written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, explore factors, multiples and prime numbers, and choose appropriate strategies when solving multi-step Year 6 Maths problems.

02

Explore fractions, ratio and algebra

Deepen children's understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages and the relationships between them. Children should calculate with fractions, solve problems involving percentages, ratio and proportion, and develop their understanding of algebra by using simple formulae, generating and describing sequences, expressing missing number problems algebraically and finding pairs of numbers that satisfy equations.

03

Apply measurement skills

Give children opportunities to solve problems involving length, mass, capacity, time and money, convert between different units of measure and use decimal notation where appropriate. Children should develop their understanding of perimeter, area and volume and apply their calculation skills confidently when solving increasingly complex Year 6 Maths questions involving measures.

04

Explore geometry, statistics and reasoning

Extend children's understanding of angles and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, and develop their ability to describe positions using coordinates across four quadrants. Children should interpret and construct tables, charts and graphs, explore averages and use data to solve problems, while applying mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills across all areas of Year 6 Maths.
