Remind your children of the features of coordinate grids as well as how to plot, read and interpret coordinates. Get them drawing shapes by plotting their vertices on all four quadrants, then build on these skills by learning more about three types of transformation: reflection, translation and rotation. There’s plenty of opportunities for children to practise the skills demonstrated on the slides that are included with each lesson.
Each downloadable lesson includes lesson plan, a slideshow presentation, a choice of two activities, and a range of printable resources.
Plotting Co-ordinates
This series of lessons begins with you recapping the features of coordinate grids, then challenge children to locate, plot and draw connecting lines (to describe shapes) between coordinates in the first quadrant. Children can then practise these skills during either of the two included activities. Some children may also locate and plot coordinates in all four quadrants.
This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- Resource sheet
Shaping Co-ordinates
In this lesson, children are challenged to visualise and accurately draw polygons according to given dimensions by plotting their vertices on co-ordinates in the first quadrant. Following this, there’s a choice of two activities where children can practise plotting multiple co-ordinates to describe specific shapes.
This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- Challenge cars
- Blank first quadrant sheet
Reflecting Shapes
Building on children’s growing knowledge of grids and co-ordinates, the included slides explain in straightforward terms how to transform a shape plotted in the first quadrant by reflecting it in all three of the other quadrants. As you work through the slides, there’s opportunities for children to practise and for you to check their understanding before they go off to practise these skills even more during either of the two included activities.
This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- Challenge sheets
- Blank four quadrant sheet
Translating Shapes
Take a closer look at translation, as children learn how to translate shapes described in the first quadrant in all three of the other quadrants. The included main activity includes differentiation to ensure that all of your children may practise translating, and the alternative activity challenges children to translate multiple shapes on the same grid!
This downloadable lesson includes a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- Blank four quadrant sheet
- Challenge cards
Shape Rotation
How can we rotate shapes? Explain some ways in which shapes can be rotated, then challenge children to visualise and draw shapes which are rotated by 90 or 180 degrees around one of their vertices, or around a point in the centre of the shapes given. The slides clearly show how to do this, and children may practise during either of the two included activities.
