Inspire your class to design and create a range of African instruments in this six-lesson DT scheme for Years 5 and 6. Explore the rich and energetic genre of African music and use it to inspire the investigation and creation of several different African instruments including the kalimba, djembe drum and the shekere. Allow your class to discover how each instrument makes its sound and replicate this using suitable materials and tools. Work towards the purpose of using the instruments in a class performance of African-inspired music, creating a rich experience to evaluate the instruments you have all made.

You might find our FREE Musical Vocabulary KS2 Poster a handy accompaniment to these lessons.

Great slides for presentation and a good range of ideas and resources to adapt. My only issue is with not being able to edit the presentations at all - this means that I can't adjust the titles (we use WALTs) or modify the tasks easily. We're enjoying this project, though!
