Fractions Year 3

Understanding and using fractions is an increasingly important skill in KS2 as it lays the foundation for a wide range of essential mathematical concepts that students will use throughout their lives.

By the end of KS1, children should be able to:

  • recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity
  • write simple fractions for example, 1/2 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2

During Year 3, in line with the National Curriculum, children are taught to:

  • count up and down in tenths; recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10
  • recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
  • recognise and use fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
  • recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators
  • add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole [for example, 5/7 + 1/7 = 6/7]
  • compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the same denominators
  • solve problems that involve all of the above

PlanBee's ready-to-teach Fractions Year 3 schemes of work ensure coverage of the above National Curriculum objectives. Each of our lesson packs has been designed to save teachers time by providing everything needed to deliver outstanding Maths lessons, including lesson plans, slideshows and a range of printable activities.

Fractions Year 3: Finding Fractions

In this five-lesson scheme of work for Year 3, your children will learn all about recognising, finding, writing and comparing fractions. They begin by identifying, recording and counting in tenths, before moving on to finding unit fractions of quantities, recognising simple equivalences, and learning how to compare and order fractions. Finally, children will apply all of their knowledge and understanding of fractions by solving a variety of fractions problems.

Each of the lessons within this Fractions Year 3 pack contains:

  • a detailed lesson plan with differentiated activities
  • a slideshow for the teaching input
  • a range of printable resources for independent learning activities
  • answer sheets where necessary

Fractions Year 3: Fractions in Action

Continue to build on your Year 3 class's knowledge and understanding of fractions with this ready-to-teach scheme of work.

This series of Year 3 'Fractions in Action' lessons will first help to remind your class what fractions are and how to use them. With an initial focus on understanding eighths, quarters and halves, and how they relate to each other, children will then be challenged to use their knowledge to solve a variety of problems relating to fractions, such as adding and subtracting fractions, ordering fractions and finding fractions of numbers.

Each of the lessons within this Fractions Year 3 pack contains:

  • a slideshow for the teaching input
  • a range of printable resources for independent learning activities
  • answer sheets where necessary
