What is a parable?
A parable is a short, simple story that teaches a lesson or highlight a moral.
When Jesus was talking to his followers, he often told parables as an easy way to show people what he wanted them to learn.

One day when Jesus was teaching, a man asked him, "God says that you should love your neighbour as you love yourself, but who is my neighbour?” To help him understand, Jesus told the man this story...
Once, a Jewish man was travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho when he was attacked by robbers. They ripped his clothes, beat him and then left him half dead on the roadside.
Soon afterwards, a priest came walking along the road. He saw the man lying there hurt and bleeding but instead of helping he just walked on and pretended he hadn’t seen him.

The man lay there unable to move. Suddenly, he heard footsteps. “At last,” he thought. “Maybe this person will help me.” But the man, who was a lawyer, crossed over to the other side of the road and just kept going.
Just when the man thought he would die right there at the side of the road, he saw someone coming. “Oh no,” he thought. “It’s a Samaritan. Samaritans and Jews are enemies. He won’t help me.” But to his surprise, the Samaritan came straight towards him and started to help him.

The Samaritan cleaned him up and put bandages on his wounds, then he put him on his donkey and took him to the nearest inn. “Take care of this man until he is better,” said the Samaritan, handing the innkeeper some money. “If it costs more than this to keep him here until he is well, I will pay you the rest when I come back.”
After finishing the story, Jesus asked, “Which of the three men do you think was a neighbour to the man who was attacked by robbers?” Jesus asked the man. “The Samaritan who showed him kindness,” replied the man. “Exactly,” said Jesus. “This is how you should treat all people too, even those who are your enemies.”
