In these Let’s Go to the Arctic KS1 Geography lessons, your Year 1 or Year 2 children will become polar explorers as they discover the Arctic region and learn about its climate, landscapes, wildlife and settlements. Throughout the series of lessons, children will locate the Arctic on a globe and map, explore its seasons and weather, investigate its physical features, and find out how Arctic animals survive in this cold environment. They will also learn about human features in Arctic towns and cities before comparing Sisimiut in Greenland with Whitby in the United Kingdom.
Each of these six ready-to-teach KS1 Arctic lessons provides everything you need to deliver these fun lessons, including easy-to-follow lesson plans, slideshows for the whole-class teaching input, and a range of different activities suitable for adaptive learning.

Lesson 1: Locating the Arctic Circle
In this first lesson, children are introduced to the Arctic and learn where it is located on Earth. They discover that the Arctic is a cold region around the North Pole and learn about the Arctic Circle, an imaginary line around the northern part of the Earth.
Children use maps to identify the Arctic Circle and explore which countries and regions have land within it. They also locate the United Kingdom and compare its position to the Arctic Circle.

Lesson 2: Arctic Weather
Children explore what the Arctic is like in summer and winter. They compare photographs of the Arctic in different seasons and learn how the weather, daylight and landscape change throughout the year. Children discover that Arctic winters are long, cold and dark, while Arctic summers have melting ice, growing plants and lighter nights.
In their independent activities, they compare the features of each season through discussion and sorting activities.

They learn that physical features are natural parts of the world and distinguish them from human features made by people.
