Art Illusions KS2 is a six-lesson art scheme that introduces children to illusion and perspective through practical, drawing-focused activities. Children explore how artists create depth, distance and movement by working with outdoor and interior perspective, foreshortening, trompe l’oeil, impossible shapes and optical art. Through step-by-step modelling, discussion and independent practice, children develop key techniques such as vanishing points, horizon lines and construction lines, applying these skills to create imaginative and realistic artwork.

Lesson 1: Vanishing Points
In this lesson, children are introduced to the idea of illusion in art and explore how artists create the illusion of depth and distance using perspective.
Through teacher modelling, guided discussion and independent practice, children learn how vanishing points, horizon lines and construction lines are used to keep objects in proportion.

Lesson 2: Exploring Perspective
In this lesson, children revisit their understanding of perspective before exploring how artists use it to create realistic interior scenes.
Following step-by-step teacher modelling of how to draw a simple interior using perspective, children apply these ideas in their independent work by creating their own room drawings using a vanishing point to help make their interiors look realistic.

Lesson 3: Foreshortening
In this lesson, children revisit their understanding of perspective before exploring how artists use foreshortening to create the illusion of depth.
Children learn how changing proportions can make figures appear as though they are coming towards the viewer through visual examples and teacher modelling. They then apply this understanding in their independent work by using foreshortening to draw superhero poses that show depth and movement.

Lesson 4: Trompe L'oeil and Photorealism
In this lesson, children explore how artists use trompe l’oeil to trick the viewer’s eye.
Through discussion and visual examples, children learn how artists use light and shadow to make flat images appear realistic and three-dimensional, before being introduced to photorealism as a modern way of creating the illusion of reality. Children then apply this learning in their independent work by carefully using shading to try to trick the viewer’s eye and create a realistic effect in their own drawings.

Lesson 5: Breaking the Rules of Perspective
In this lesson, children explore how artists deliberately break the rules of perspective to create impossible images and visual illusions.
Children learn how artists use mixed viewpoints and conflicting spatial clues to make objects and spaces appear believable at first glance but impossible on closer inspection. They then apply this learning in their independent work by deliberately breaking the rules of perspective to design their own impossible objects or spaces.

Lesson 6: Op Art
In this final lesson, children explore how artists use lines, patterns and colour to create optical illusions that trick the viewer’s eye.
Through discussion and visual examples, children learn how Op Art uses repetition, contrast and carefully placed lines to create the illusion of movement in flat images. Children then create their own Op Art designs that use pattern and contrast to make images appear to move.
