This 'Changes and Reproduction' Science scheme of work focuses on the animals including humans Year 5 National Curriculum objectives. Throughout these six human life cycle KS2 lessons, children will learn about sexual reproduction and gestation, how young children grow and develop, the changes that occur during puberty as well as discovering about the changing needs of humans during old age.

Lesson 1

Human Life Cycle

This lesson outlines the main stages in the life cycle of humans.

Children are challenged to order the main stages, think about what they already know about the growth and development of humans at each of these stages, and consider the factors which affect the rate of growth in humans.

Lesson 2

Gestation

This lesson explains in detail the processes, growth and development that occur during gestation in humans.

Children will learn about sexual reproduction, fertilisation and pregnancy.

They will also compare the gestation period of humans to other animals.

Childhood

Children will learn about the rapid growth and development of children during infancy in this lesson, as well as considering the changing needs of children as they get older.

They will be challenged to make notes as they learn and produce reports about the development and changing needs of children.

Lesson 4

Puberty Part One

This lesson focuses on the initial changes that occur in the bodies of boys and girls at the start of puberty.

Children will learn about the roles of hormones in the body and start to consider some of the changes that occur inside and outside the body at the start of puberty.

Puberty Part Two

This teaches children about the changes that occur in the bodies of boys and girls as they prepare for adulthood.

Focusing firstly on sperm production in boys and menstruation in girls, children will go on to consider ways in which teenagers can stay fit and healthy during puberty and adolescence.

Adulthood and Old Age
