Your class will begin by reading and analysing Michael Rosen's 'Chocolate Cake' poem, before watching the poet perform it. They are then challenged to use what they have learnt to prepare their own performance of another of Michael Rosen's poems, 'Chocolate'. Children will then plan, write and perform their own chocolate-themed narrative poem.

Lesson 1

Exploring a Narrative Poem

In this chocolate-themed Narrative Poetry KS2 lesson, your Year 4 class will explore what a narrative poem is. They will look at and discuss the features of rhythm, rhyme and figurative language which are often used in poetry.

Children will then read Michael Rosen's 'Chocolate Cake' poem, and answer questions, either individually or in discussion groups. Finally, they will watch a clip of Michael Rosen performing his poem.

In this lesson, children will again watch, and this time analyse, a performance of Michael Rosen's 'Chocolate Cake' poem. They will focus on how he uses his voice, facial expression and body language to engage the audience. Using this knowledge, children are then challenged to prepare a performance of 'Chocolate' by Michael Rosen, another chocolate-themed narrative poem!

Writing a Poem

Your Year 4 class will compose their own chocolate-themed poetry in this Writing a Narrative Poem lesson pack!

Children will first briefly revisit Michael Rosen's poems 'Chocolate Cake' and 'Chocolate' to remind themselves of the devices he uses to make his poems engaging for the reader. They will also learn about line breaks, and start to identify the two main types: end-stopped lines and enjambed lines. Children will then use this knowledge, and their ideas from the previous lesson, to write their own chocolate-themed narrative poem.
