Remainders as Fractions
Your Year 6 children will learn how to express remainders as fractions in the first lesson of this division planning pack. After recapping how the chunking method of division works (starting by dividing two-digits by a single digit and moving quickly on to dividing three- and four-digits by a single digit), your children will then explore how remainders can be expressed as a fraction. They will also learn how to use multiplication to check division calculations that involve remainders.
This Remainders as Fractions lesson for KS2 contains a detailed lesson plan, a slideshow for the teaching input that clearly explains these mathematical processes and gives your class many opportunities to have a go for themselves, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources, including division worksheets. It's all planned and ready to go!

Remainders as Decimals
This lesson teaches your Year 6 class to express remainders as decimals. The included slideshow presentation demonstrate how to convert remainders first to a fraction, then to a decimal using knowledge of the relationship between fractions and decimals. They will tackle a range of calculations, many of which can be solved mentally, expressing their remainders as decimals.
During their independent learning, the main activity challenges them to match division calculations to an answer whilst the alternative activity has some challenging investigations to tackle!
This Remainders as Decimals Year 6 Maths lesson comes completely ready for you to deliver to your class, with challenges appropriate for every learner.

The main activity has some fun division mazes that the children will need to work their way through to reach the exit, only moving through calculations that have no remainders. The alternative activity will have them generating their own calculations to solve and the plenary has some tricky missing number calculations to really test their understanding!

They are then challenged to solve three-digit by two-digit calculations, or four-digit by two-digit calculations if they’ve got the hang of it! The alternative activity for this lesson will have them checking long division calculations that have been completed to see which are correct, enforcing their understanding of how the method works.
