This Year 5/6 Geography scheme of work explores endangered animals, their habitats and the environmental challenges they face. Across five lessons, children locate where endangered animals live, investigate how climate and physical conditions affect habitats and explore how threats such as habitat loss, pollution, hunting and climate change can cause animal populations to decline. They also examine the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation before considering how conservation can protect, restore and reconnect habitats to support wildlife.

Lesson 1: Endangered Animal Habitats

Lesson 2: Suitable Habitats
In this lesson, children explore why endangered animals live in particular habitats and how physical conditions affect the resources available there. They will consider how climate influences habitat features such as vegetation and water, and how these provide animals with food, shelter and space. Children will use this understanding to explain why different habitats are suitable for different endangered animals.
