Healthy Bodies - Lesson 3: Heart Matters

The first lesson in this series starts by challenging your class to think about how we know what our bodies need to be healthy. This is done by looking at how scientists in the past worked out the effect that nutrition has on the body, taking the example of the first-ever clinical trial by James Lind exploring how to cure scurvy in sailors. Your class also have the chance to design their own clinical trial to investigate how nutrition affects the body.

This Year 6 Food Labels lesson looks at a variety of food groups and why it is important to eat a balanced and varied diet. It then goes on to look at food labels and what they can tell us about the foods we eat.

This Circulatory System lesson teaches your class that our bodies need food and water to survive but this lesson takes a look inside the human body and explores how water and nutrients are transported by the circulatory system. They will find out what the function of the heart and lungs are, as well as how arteries and veins transport blood to all the different parts of the body. There is also the opportunity to dissect a heart so your class can see how they work for themselves!

This Year 6 Muscles of the Body KS2 lesson explores how our skeletal muscles work before looking at why our muscles get tired when we exercise. Your class will learn the names of some of the major muscle groups before thinking about how different exercises affect different muscles.

The final evaluation lesson in this series gives your class the chance to consolidate what they have learnt about how to keep their bodies healthy.
