In this scheme, children will learn about the artist Henri Rousseau and explore the key features of his jungle-inspired artwork. They will develop their drawing skills by experimenting with line, shape and pattern, and learn how to mix primary colours to create the secondary colours needed for a vibrant jungle scene. Throughout the unit, children will build an understanding of depth by arranging simple shapes to form animals and plants, before completing a final jungle composition using collage and overlapping elements to create a rich, layered effect.

Lesson 1: Key Features
In this first lesson, children will be introduced to Henri Rousseau. As a class, they will explore some of his most famous jungle artworks, discussing what they see, the colours used, how the paintings make them feel, and highlighting key features of Rousseau’s style.
In their independent activities, children will use a viewfinder to focus on an interesting section of a Rousseau painting. They will then complete sentences about Rousseau and his artwork.

Lesson 2: Drawing Skills
In this lesson, children will focus on how Rousseau used repetition, symmetry and stylised shapes in his plant and leaf paintings.
Through discussion and close observation, they will identify the lines, shapes and patterns that make up different leaf drawings, then follow step-by-step instructions to create their own stylised leaves.

Lesson 3: Mixing Colours
Children will learn about primary and secondary colours, and discover how different amounts of each primary colour change the hue.
Through discussion and observation of Rousseau’s work and real jungle images, children will identify a jungle-themed colour palette and experiment with mixing their own greens, oranges and browns to create realistic and imaginative jungle tones.

Lesson 4: Overlapping and Layering
Through discussion and observation of Rousseau’s jungle paintings, children will learn to identify and describe the foreground and background, noticing how overlapping and colour choices create depth.
Children will then sketch their own jungle scene, deciding on portrait or landscape layout, and paint lighter greens for the background and darker greens for the foreground. In the alternative activity, children create a jungle scene with depth using collage.

Lesson 5: Creating Animals from Simple Shapes
Children will explore the animals in Rousseau’s jungle paintings, discussing where they appear in the scene.
They will learn that Rousseau often made animals look hidden among leaves. As a class, children will look at how to use simple shapes to draw an animal. In their independent activities, children will draw or cut out simple shapes to create their own imaginative jungle animals.

Lesson 6: Creating a Jungle Scene
In this final lesson, children will explore how Rousseau hid animals in his jungle paintings by overlapping them with plants and trees.
In their independent activities, they will create one or two animals, thinking carefully about size and placement, then use collage to add overlapping leaves and flowers to make the animals look partly hidden.
