Indian Art - Lesson 3: Mehndi Patterns

Each of these Indian Art lesson packs comes with everything you need to deliver these creative and colourful lessons. Each of the five lesson has an easy-to-follow lesson plan, an engaging slideshow for the whole-class input, differentiated activity ideas, and a range of printable resources, including worksheets, picture cards and step-by-step photo instructions to support children as they create their own beautiful Indian art.

In this Indian Paintings KS2 Art lesson, your Year 3 or Year 4 class will have the chance to explore lots of different styles on Indian paintings. They will explore examples of Mughal, Rajput, Mysore, Tanjore, Kangra, Madhubani and Pattachitra artwork, discussing the colours and patterns used in each style as they do so.

During their independent art time, they can then either work together to create a mural in the Madhubani style, or use viewfinders to sketch different sections of a variety of Indian paintings.

In this Indian Elephants Art lesson for KS2, your Year 3 or Year 4 class will find out about the famous Hastimangala festival, which is part of the Holi festival of colours. The included slideshow presentation shows your children some examples of the intricate decorations that adorn elephants during this festival, exploring the colours and patterns used.

This Mehndi Art lesson for Year 3 or Year 4 looks at the beautiful and intricate Mehndi patterns used to decorate hands, feet, legs and arms. The slideshow presentation for the teaching input explores how henna is used and looks at the variety of symmetrical patterns that can be applied.

During their independent learning time, your KS2 children can then practise drawing Mehndi patterns for themselves, and decorate hands, arms, feet and legs using traditional Mehndi patterns!

Your class will learn about the fascinating technique of Indian block painting in this Year 3/4 Art lesson! They will learn how a wooden block called a bunta is used to print intricate patterns on fabrics, and look at a variety of photos that show people using block printing to create beautiful cloth to be made into clothes and other items.

During their independent learning time, your KS2 class can then create their own block prints to create patterns on fabric using a variety of materials.

In this Rangoli Art lesson, your KS2 class will learn all about the incredible art of rangoli by examining a range of images showing detailed rangoli designs. They will be reminded about the festival of Diwali and learn that people celebrate this festival by participating in lots of different customs and traditions, including creating rangoli art.

During their independent learning time, your class can then use coloured salt to create their very own rangoli patterns or there is also option of another (less messy!) activity during which children create name artwork using rangoli patterns.
